The MS Backup program is in the add-ons\msbackup folder on Microsoft Me CDs
but unfortunately it appears that not all OEMs have included this folder on
the CDs they provide with new PCs. Similarly many of those OEMs who simply
provide restore CDs appear also to have omitted this program.
The executable needed to install MSBackup that Microsoft distribute on the Win
Me CD is msbexp.exe so if you have an OEM CD or a recovery CD you might want
to search the CD and see if it was included.
See also MS KB 264541 - "Microsoft Backup Tool Is Not Installed by Windows
Millennium Edition" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=264541). Note that
Microsoft have not made MSBackup available for download.
If no copy of MSBackup came with your system that could be no bad thing since
MSBackup is very old and extremely limited in its capabilities dating as it
does from the era of Win 95 and the days of small hard disks and relatively
small and slow tape drives and really isn't suited for use with today's large
hard drives. You would be well advised to seek an alternative application for
making backups. There are many better and more modern options available such
as drive imaging products like Drive Image from PowerQuest and Ghost from
Symantec.
However if your problem is that you have QIC files created in say Win98 and
wish to restore them to Win Me you might want to checkout trialware version of
Backup MyPC from Stomp, inc which will open .QIC files created by The Windows
98 version of MS Backup. The trial program can be obtained from
http://www.stompinc.com/trial/index.phtml?stp.
